WhatsApp is adding a new shortcut button for users to submit payments via WhatsApp Pay in the beta version of the app. It’s currently a beta-only feature, but may be rolled out with a stable build in future updates. Previously, instead of having a dedicated button on the chat bar itself, you had to go to the chat action sheet to send the payment.
As discovered by WABetaInfoThe button is currently available to Indian users in the latest version of WhatsApp Beta (v. 2.21.17). The button is also under development for iOS. WABetaInfo Please note that it will be available in a future update. WhatsApp Pay is built on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform and is part of a list of UPI-based payment services such as Google Pay, Flipkart’s PhonePe and PayTM. It can be used to send and receive money between two bank accounts in a fast and secure way for free. Getting started with WhatsApp for sending and receiving money is very easy.
Not everyone has access to WhatsApp paid yet, and when the service was first launched, only 20 million of India’s 400 million users actually had this feature. That number has grown from the 10 million user pilots launched earlier last year. India has set a 30% cap on the total amount of UPI transaction processes by third-party app providers. This is intended to prevent major tech companies such as Google and Flipkart from dominating the market. This seems to be the reason WhatsApp is careful not to offer this feature to all 400 million users in India. This is because the 30% cap was enforced for new entrants to the market from January 2021. Still, if you’re lucky to have WhatsApp Pay available, you can find the newly moved Pay button in the chat bar.
